A motion came in from Monaco—two accused operatives with ties to Ukraine's security services, a dead suspect in the woods, and an account that doesn't hold. The agent changed his story, which shifts the question from what happened to who authorized it, and to whom a security service answers when the law is watching. Hildegard has the first word today, then Thoreau.
A Ukrainian security agent accused of murder changes his story when caught — this is not new, only the nation and the machinery are new. I watched Frederick Barbarossa do precisely this with his antipopes: the Church's power claimed necessity, claimed higher purpose, claimed it operated in a realm where ordinary law did not bite.
The moment you made legality conditional on institutional survival, you had already destroyed the thing you claimed to save. When my abbess sent the excommunicated man into consecrated ground, Mainz placed us under interdict — silenced the music, which they knew was my breath itself.
But I refused the exhumation. The law existed, and it would be kept, or nothing else we built was real.
A wartime security service that re-writes its own testimony when daylight finds it has already surrendered the war worth winning — the one for legitimacy itself. The body in the Monaco woods names something true: that when the narrative changes, the State has already admitted it was not acting as law, but as appetite dressed in uniform.
The Dominicans and Franciscans, when Guilielmus de S. Amore with others began to oppose the Mendicant orders; afterwards indeed it has been changed somewhat; nor was it found in the monastery of Bingen, where other writings of S. Hildegardis are preserved, our predecessors have a…
You who are in the place of Christ, hear again: A certain king had a certain city in great honors, which he entrusted to three men of his people, so that they might have the care of it in custody. Indeed, he entrusted the first with the tower, the second with the plain of the cit…
Hildegard is warmed, she herself causes the dangers of poison to decline, because the air, which is around the human, and the noxious air coming and emitted through treachery, is corrected through the virtue of the same heart and *caritas*, because the same air around those thing…
we will see, not led to the end. Of the visitation of the relics with less solemnity Serarius in Moguntiacis, book 2, chapter 38, writes these things: « When I was staying there (in Mount St. Rupert) and I had run through a little before the volume (in which the holy writings are…
the crime of divine examination, that one, overcoming, oppresses, when divine majesty, before the clamor of its insanity is publicly manifested, with that eye to which all things are openly naked, foresees. But under that skin, the purest *ether* is, having under itself no skin; …
When a man changes his story between the deed and the courtroom, he has admitted the first one was untrue. An agent of a state security apparatus, killing someone and burying the body in another nation's soil, then revising his account when pressed by law — this is not policy gone wrong. This is policy succeeding exactly as intended, until the paperwork arrived and the version no longer held water. I watched my own country do this.
We spoke of necessary removal, necessary expansion, necessary slavery. The narrative came after the violence, fitted to whoever was listening. The changed story here means the man knows the killing was indefensible when stated plainly — which is precisely why states do their killing in the dark and the woods. Not because darkness is required.
Because accountability is. The wartime claim always sounds reasonable until it meets a European courtroom where it must be defended in the language of law instead of the language of emergency. Then it changes. That is the tell.
unchronicled nations has died away along these shores, and once more Lowell and Manchester are on the trail of the Indian. The fact that Romans once inhabited her reflects no little dignity on Nature herself; that from some particular hill the Roman once looked out on the sea. Sh…
have not been silent respecting Cromwell’s buried wealth, and it is said that some years ago a farmer’s plough, not far from here, slid over a flat stone which emitted a hollow sound, and, on its being raised, a small hole six inches in diameter was discovered, stoned about, from…
blue and indistinct; they are the more like the heavens. Of what moment are facts that can be lost,—which need to be commemorated? The monument of death will outlast the memory of the dead. The pyramids do not tell the tale which was confided to them; the living fact commemorates…
actual history; it would certainly astonish those who know nothing about it. I will only hint at some of the enterprises which I have cherished. In any weather, at any hour of the day or night, I have been anxious to improve the nick of time, and notch it on my stick too; to stan…
on the dead body of her brother Polynices, notwithstanding the edict of King Creon condemning to death that one who should perform this service, which the Greeks deemed so important, for the enemy of his country; but Ismene, who is of a less resolute and noble spirit, declines ta…
